To smash or not?

The hot scrapbooking topic at the moment seems to be smash books.  For those of you wondering what I'm talking about, this little video tells you all you need to know.

So - yes in short a little book to stick things in.  Mmm - seen that anywhere before? Is it something to get excited about?  It appears that lots of people are and it could turn into a "marmite" subject - either you love um or hate um. Some people have already started to make their own - check out Emy's or Susie's or Ali's or MaryAnne's.  Shimelle had an interesting take on the whole issue - is the product really aimed at a scrapbooker?  As I read her post, I thought these might be nice gifts for my girls - something to complete over the summer holidays maybe.

So do I smash?  Well sort of. For my last few holidays I have kept a travel journal, make notes on what we did each day. I make them using up old papers that I don't think I will use on my pages and decorate them with stamps.  You may remember my Disney one I posted here.  For my holiday last week, I added some plastic pockets to collect the ticket stubs, leaflets and postcards of places we had visited.  Here are a few pictures.

Since starting blogging, I also carry a notebook around for noting down ideas when I'm not at my desk.  It is something I do need to get better at as I quite often get ideas from stuff I see in magazines but don't make a note and then can't remember where I've seen it.  I suppose I should just "smash" it into a note book!

So what do you think?  Do you get the whole smash book thing.  Will you smash?  Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

To be honest I have never really been sure what a smash book is. I like the idea, but just know that I am unlikely to keep it up, lol. Might do something similar to yours for my DD for the holidays.

It's very like the kind of notebook I have always carried around with me anyway, but I did like Shimelle's take on it - maybe I could convert a few nonscrapbooking friends with one

Thanks for the link to Shimelle's post - have to agree that I (and others) was getting a bit snooty about why I wouldn't PAY for such a thing. I'm glad that there is the hype and consequent DIY backlash as I want to make DS1&GF a travel journal for the summer and I now have lots of ideas :D

I probably do agree with Shimelle that it would be a great gift for someone who DOESN'T scrapbook, but not something I would buy for myself...I DO love your amazing Travel Journal Lynn!

I think it's a great gift for someone and when I showed it to a non crafting friend she really liked it and wanted one. I have a notebook all the time but I did make a smash book so that I would have somewhere to put special things from days out that won't necessarily make it to a 12x12 layout

I love the supplies, but in the same way I love all the stash available lol! I've made my own 'kit' using a notebook I've had hanging around forever, and now I have one designated space to collect together all the stuff that I collect and save already.... But I did do it myself from exsting stash :) I do similar with travel journals etc (though I do sometimes buy kits that I love and supplement them with my own bits and pieces) I love yours! xx

I have been pretty resistant to the hype surrounding 'Smash' since the last CHA. It rather annoyed me because they weren't even available. But I tend to be stubborn about resisting empty marketing hype.

They have given me a kick in the pants to get some travel journals made up for our summer camping trip, though. I'm hoping to get my boys recording their memories/thoughts of our adventures.
